Description
This is a community engagement opportunity hosted by the WVU Outdoor Economic Development Collaborative (OEDC), Ascend WV, Adventure WV, the WVWRI (West Virginia Water Research Institute), Three Rivers Waterkeeper, the Ohio River Valley Water Sanitation Commission (ORSANCO), the Mon River Trails Conservancy (MRTC), and the City of Morgantown.
This year, on April 18th, we will hold our 3rd Annual Mon River Sweep, a community cleanup focused on improving the health and appearance of our local riverfront. The event will begin at 10:00 AM, and volunteers will help remove trash and debris along the Monongahela River corridor from the Seneca Center up to the dam, as well as portions of Deckers Creek. Participants will assist with cleanup efforts both along the rail-trail, in the river itself, and in a small section of Deckers Creek.
Last year, we removed over 6,600 pounds of trash from the river with the help of around 50 volunteers. This year, we hope to build on that momentum by reaching 10,000 pounds of trash removed and 100 volunteers participating.
All volunteers will meet near Morgantown Adventure Outfitters (10 Walnut St, Morgantown, WV 26505) before heading out to their assigned cleanup areas. We will have multiple shifts available throughout the day, allowing volunteers to participate for a portion of the event or stay and help for the entire day if they wish. All cleanup supplies will be provided, as well as drinks and snacks; folks just need to dress appropriately and come with a good attitude.
